Oracle Cloud and The VMware Partnership

Oracle and VMware partner.

At the most recent Oracle Open World, Oracle announced an expanded partnership with VMware to help customers leverage their existing enterprise software and cloud solutions to make a move to the cloud.

Here is a link to an Oracle Press Release

Under this new partnership, customers will be able to support their hybrid cloud strategies by running VMware Cloud Foundation on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Quoting Larry Ellison “Only cloud that will allow you to manage your own VMware stack. The VMware stack you’re running on-premises, you really can lift and shift it intact to the Oracle Cloud. You can use your existing tools, your existing operational produces. Or you can take your on-premises VMware environment and link it up to OCI, and get the benefit of Oracle Analytics Cloud, or Oracle Autonomous Database

You really control version management, operations, upgrade time of the VMware stack, making it easy, enabling you to migrate, if that’s what you want to do, from on-prem into the cloud with almost no change. Very big deal, very important announcement“. Source: Larry Ellison’s 15 Boldest Statements At Oracle OpenWorld

This statement is a far cry from the many times I have heard prospects/customers tell us that Oracle is not supported on VMware. Let’s hope this eliminates that statement from the FUD playbook.

Why This Partnership Should Not be a Surprise

This announcement should come as no surprise to anyone. No doubt Oracle makes a great database and some great applications. Yet when it comes to the cloud, Oracle really missed the boat in the early days. Here are a few quotes from Larry Ellison:

“The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we’ve redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do. … The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women’s fashion.”

“Maybe I’m an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It’s complete gibberish. It’s insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?”

“We’ll make cloud computing announcements because, you know, if orange is the new pink, we’ll make orange blouses. I mean, I’m not gonna fight this thing … well, maybe we’ll do an ad. Uh, I don’t understand what we would do differently in the light of cloud computing, other than market … you know, change the wording on some of our ads.”

It’s clear Oracle missed the boat when it comes to the cloud and is playing catchup.

Oracle OVM – Not A Real Player

Yet when it comes to virtualization, Oracle OVM is not even in the same league as VMware. Sure there are plenty of Oracle Partners that will talk up the virtue of Oracle OVM. I get it, they need to keep Oracle happy. They can sell more services (It needs a lot more support). The fact is the numbers don’t lie.

A number of years ago, the independent Oracle Users Group (Now part of Quest Oracle Community were asked with virtualization platform they used. See picture below.

It’s clear, Oracle has a problem. They have great applications, they have great databases. Yet the company suffer from Organic Growth.

A well-documented fact by Gartner is that Oracle and other vendors use software audits to generate revenue. Survey Analysis: Software Audits Are on the Rise and Your Enterprise Might Be Next

Here is a great blog, on what triggers an Oracle Audit: SEVEN TRIGGERS THAT SKYROCKET YOU TO THE TOP OF THE ORACLE AUDIT LIST

Oracle is playing catch-up, its no surprise they teamed up with VMware the industry leader. Now Oracle can offer the industry-leading virtualization platform on the Oracle Cloud. This is great news for Oracle and anyone who wants to leverage the cloud. This is a further proof point of VMware Vision Any Cloud, Any Application, any Device.

With VMware as the underlying platform, your organization can easily implement a multi-cloud strategy.

Oracle Cloud and Oracle Licensing

To answer this question, I will quote another blog. “This collaboration is a great step forward. However, Oracle licensing policies for VMWare remain the same, so be sure your environment is licensed correctly.

The quote of this source is Monin Database Managed Services. They did a nice blog titled Carelessly running Oracle, even on VMware and Nutanix.

My other favorite quote from the blog.

For those who know and for those who would not know: Oracle licensing policies are complexconfusing and if not applied correctly, they can be very costly after an Oracle license audit.

Overall this is great news. Its does also make licensing more complex. Here is a useful guide on Oracle Licensing.
